Looking Back is a Trap Sometimes, Being Here is So Easy to Do

Muted congratulations to Mr. John Middleton for correctly naming "Alive" by Pearl Jam as the Sunday Song of the Day. Mr. Middleton, if the Blues can only draw with Wigan 1-1 at "Fortress" Stamford Bridge, how are they going to withstand consecutive matches with Liverpool, Man. U., and Liverpool (once again) in the span of a week?

Last week in Civil Liberties, we discussed attorney advertising, and I swore a silent oath to myself that I would never engage in such a practice, but it appears others are making that promise ring hollow.

Finally, congratulations to Mr. Dan Carlson as the winner of last week's Caption Contest (the Gen. Petraeus/Wii photo*).

Dan's response: "Why buy body armor when there are video games to be played?"

This Week's Photo
My submission: "The first suspect in Big Papi's murder? This mysterious JBD fellow."

As always, the Caption Contest runs through Sunday (4/20). Heh, 4/20. Um, not that I know anything about that. I'll just show myself out and you can place your submissions in the comments section.

*After further examination of the photo, General Petraeus seems to be swinging left-handed while the character on the screen is swinging from a right-handed position. Perhaps there's something I'm missing here, but if there's a metaphor for our oft-bungled presence in Iraq, that might be it.

In an unrelated note, there's an interesting poll on a website I keep up with: Baseball's Worst GM. Today's post eliminated the 18 least bad--guess who's not on the list--and the tournament of anti-champions will commence in the next few days.

Jeremy,

After doing a little research, here's the list of those still in the running for "Baseball's Worst GM":

1.Ken Williams-Chicago White Sox
2. Bill Bavasi-Seattle Mariners
3. J.P. Ricciardi-Toronto Blue Jays
4. Jim Hendry- Chicago Cubs
5. Wayne Krivsky-Cincinnati Reds
6. Dan O'Dowd-Colorado Rockies
7. Ed Wade-Houston Astros
8. Ned Colletti-Los Angeles Dodgers
9. Omar Minaya-New York Mets
10. Kevin Towers-San Diego Padres
11. Brian Sabean-San Francisco Giants
12. Jon Daniels-(Your) Texas Rangers

That's 8 NL GMs and 4 AL GMs remaining in the race to the bottom. My vote goes to Sabean in San Fran.

A Liverpool fan is one to be talking.

Wes,

Besides just being a little good-natured ribbing towards John, I also say that about Chelsea because they have had a relatively easy route through the Champions League so far this campaign.

Chelsea won their group, a surprising Schalke finished second, an overachieving Rosenborg finished third, and a disappointing Valencia finished last.

For the first knockout round Chelsea drew Olympiacos, arguably the weakest team to make it to the Round of 16.

In the Round of 8, Chelsea drew Fenerbahce, who are not exactly lightweights, but they are not ready for the big time in Europe quite yet.

I contrast that with Liverpool, who had to face Inter Milan, whom many were calling the best side (besides Manchester United) in Europe at the time they played in the Round of 16.

After dispatching Inter, Liverpool were rewarded with a trilogy of matches against Arsenal. While the Gunners have slipped domestically due to injuries and a lack of depth, they are still a very dangerous side, as they displayed on Sunday at Old Trafford in losing 2-1 versus Man. U.

That is not to say that Chelsea is not a formidable opponent, but at this point, I think they are still untested in Europe so far this campaign.

It should be fun to watch.

Whew! I don't disagree even a smigeon that Chelseas advancement in the Champions League is unlikely. I might have just been doing a little ribbing myself.
